about

The RPM Challenge: 10 songs or 35 minutes of music, composed and recorded entirely during the month of February.

The cover image is a section of a game board from a simulation of Conway's Game Of Life. The 5 cell entity at the lower left is a Glider, a unit that, by following the rules of the game can autonomously move across the field until it is changed by intersection with other squares. The premise is that the game progresses predictably move by move, yet the range of expression of the evolutions over time is infinite.

It feels like a perfect metaphor for the process of creating music. Note by note, certain rules are adhered to, or you move away from music into unordered sound. Yet, over time, even while following the rules, infinite complexity can and does unfold.

The album this year breaks a fundamental rule of the RPM Challenge: specifically, no pre-produced material. If you're going to break a rule, break it well. Glacial Melt was recorded during a particularly fruitful week of improvised music in 2010. I included it because it was important to me for this album to have music that was created with both members of an infamous trio that came together in 1996 in musical expression so joyous, that the local police invited themselves into our apartment to announce that our session was over.

That evening could be looked at as a starting board position that has progressed throughout space and time and resulted in Glider.
